Na zijn studie scheikunde in zijn geboortestreek Auvergne in Riom, kwam Jean-Baptiste in 1852 naar Parijs om samen te werken met de laboratoria Grimault & Cie, beroemd om hun aromatische producten zoals de 'Jodiumhoudende mierikswortelsiroop' of de 'Anti-astmatische Indiase sigaret'

Met passie en geleid door zijn verbeelding besluit hij zijn eerste stappen te zetten in het Parijse zakenmilieu en in de wereld van de parfumerie en nieuwe geuren te ontdekken in exotische landen, al snel beseffend welke fascinatie en emotie deze onontgonnen schatten konden opwekken bij de elegante dames van Europa.
