Après des études de chimie dans son Auvergne natale à Riom, Jean-Baptiste arrive à Paris en 1852 pour collaborer avec les laboratoires Grimault & Cie, célèbres pour leurs produits aromatiques tels que le « sirop de raifort iodé » ou la « cigarette indienne anti-asthmatique ».

Avec passion et guidé par son imagination, il décide de faire ses premiers pas dans le milieu des affaires parisien et dans le monde de la parfumerie, et de découvrir de nouveaux parfums dans des contrées exotiques, réalisant bientôt la fascination et l'émotion que ces trésors inexploités pouvaient éveiller chez les élégantes d'Europe.
